Get to Know Us

First Congregational Church is a vibrant, multi-generational, theologically progressive congregation of the United Church of Christ. We celebrate our commitment to be a congregation living out faith as a journey, compassionate service, and inclusion of all. Inspired by the boundless grace of God as revealed in the radical love of Jesus Christ, we aim to make the words “All are Welcome” as inclusive as they sound.

Worship is the heart of life together. We appreciate how the old, old stories of Scripture come alive in our midst. Sunday morning helps us live faithfully with compassion all week long. Plus, we love to sing!

One of our best gifts is the depth and expression of our care. Our welcome is warm, and our joy is genuine. We support each other, learn from each other, enjoy each other, and are always looking for ways to extend our generosity and love to others beyond our congregation. We endeavor to live the kind of life we hope for the whole world.

Our Covenants

Our life together is formed and guided by six Covenants that express our core values, our commitments, and our aspirations. When newcomers ask who we are and what we believe, we point to these Covenants.

Our Covenant Banners, created by our McMane Arts Ministry, are symbolic expressions of our cherished commitments. In banner order left to right, they are: Just Peace, Inclusive Language, Accessible to All, Creation Justice, W.I.S.E (Welcoming, Inclusive, Supportive, and Engaged) for Mental Health, and LGBTQ+ Open & Affirming. The intertwining ribbons represent the interconnectedness of our Covenants and our life together as a church.

Inclusive Language

We believe that God, the great mystery that fills the universe and resides deep within our souls, is too big to be fully comprehended, so we use language for God and humanity that is expansive, imaginative, and inclusive.

Open & Affirming (LGBTQ+ Welcoming)

We are a church open to and affirming people of all sexual orientations and gender identities in membership and church leadership.

Just Peace

We believe that peace is more than the absence of war and violence and that God calls us to work for the common good and to reach for abundant life for all.

Accessible to All

Founding and Future

Since our founding in 1864, the first church built in Boulder, we have gathered as a community to worship, serve, and grow as we rely on God’s grace. For more than 160 years, we have sought the Spirit’s leading to guide us in every generation and to keep us rooted in God’s steadfast love, living faithfully in the present while leaning forward into God’s future hope. As a member congregation of the United Church of Christ, we believe “God is still speaking.” Like our Pilgrims forbears, we trust “there is yet more light and truth to break forth from God’s holy Word.”
