As one of the earliest churches in the United Church of Christ (UCC) movement of Open and Affirming Churches, First Congregational Church of Boulder wholeheartedly welcomes lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer individuals into our community of faith. We affirm the full inclusion of all God’s people in every aspect of our church life. Our members played an active role in shaping this commitment within the broader church, making us not only the first congregation in Colorado, but also one of the first in the nation to embrace LGBTQ+ individuals in the full participation and leadership of the church.
For us, this commitment goes beyond offering an intentionally warm welcome – it is a profound expression of our faith and calling. Rooted in God’s boundless love, we are called to love lavishly in return. Inspired by the compassion of Jesus, who broke down barriers and extended radical inclusion, we strive to do the same. Our Open and Affirming Covenant, first adopted in 1987, reflects this enduring promise to extend an embrace as wide as the arms of God.
Made in God’s image, as persons loved by God, we are called to fully accept ourselves and our sexuality. Our sexuality is a gift of God which enriches our lives and deeply touches the reality of our own and others’ humanity.
