Membership

We appreciate creeds as “testimonies” of faith, but do not hold to them as “tests.” Love is what we share in common.

At First Congregational Church, it’s safe to say that belonging is more important to us than beliefs. While our worship is centered in Jesus Christ, our understanding of God is roomy, and we hold a deep respect for other faith traditions. Members and friends of our congregation include life-long Christians, questioning skeptics, and multi-faith families. As a congregation of the United Church of Christ, we appreciate creeds as “testimonies” of faith, but do not hold to them as “tests.” The embrace of our community is wide. Love is what we share in common.

How can I learn more about becoming part of First Congregational Church of Boulder?

We regularly host Newcomer Coffees after Sunday Worship, so that visitors and leaders of the church can meet one another, and you can find out more about our life together. At least twice a year, the pastors host a meal and an opportunity for a deeper dive. We call this session, “From UCC to FCC,” where you can learn more about our history, our denomination, our programs, and what it means to be a member of our congregation.

These sessions often help people decide whether First Congregational feels like home. Attendance at a coffee or lunch, however, is not a prerequisite to joining. The pastors are also glad to schedule a time to meet with you individually, if you have questions about what membership means for your faith journey.

How do I formally join as a member?

In becoming a member of our congregation, you are expressing your desire to be in a mutually supportive relationship with this community of faith – to receive our support and encouragement and to offer yours. There is a covenant we ask you to affirm in a service of worship as you become a member. It’s a promise to do your part to sustain our church, attending its services of worship, participating in its activities, living in the body of Christian fellowship, and making such contributions to its prosperity as lies within your power.

It’s important to us that we make promises to you too: “We pray that through loving and being loved, through serving and being served, we all may be strengthened by our mutual concern for one another; and that through our shared witness this church may faithfully serve the realm of God on earth.”

Occasionally, folks decide to join us as Associate Members, retaining their relationship with a congregation in another part of the country, while also becoming a part of ours.

We also welcome people who choose to be “Friends” of First Congregational Church by participating in the life and ministries of the community, but not taking on the specific responsibilities of membership, such as leadership, governance, decision-making, and voting in Congregational Meetings.

In whatever way you want to participate in our life together, we are glad you are here.
