Our Youth

First Congregational Church sees this as a sacred mission

We do not indoctrinate children with creeds or with absolutes, but instead give them the tools and the confidence to find for themselves faith-filled answers that feel true to them. To do that, we ground them in the certinanty that they are God’s beloved children, always loved and supported by the all-encompassing grace of God. Regardless of their race, their gender, whether they are adopted or foster, children of straight or gay parents, and regardless of their own sexual identity – they know that we are all one in the unconditional love of God.

The Stories

We teach the universality of God’s love for humanity and all of God’s creation. Through the foundational stories of our faith, from both the old and new testaments of the Bible, we learn that there have been many “non-traditional” family structures throughout history, and God called those families to do God’s work, just as God calls all of us today. It is vitally important that every child sees himself or herself as a beloved child of God. While we relate each of the biblical stories to how it informs how we live our lives today, that is secondary to the knowledge that each child holds potential miracles within their grasp through the love of God as shown to us through Jesus the Christ.

Where do I take my child?

Kindergarten and younger children are dropped off in their classrooms before the beginning of the 10:30 service. These classrooms are located at the south end of the lower level in the FAITH Center. At the 10:30 A.M. service, 1st – 5th graders start in the sanctuary with their parents, then are led off to Sunday School as a group after the first 15 minutes. Classes use different rooms based upon the activity for the week – check the posted list at the FAITH Center entrance.
The middle school, eighth graders, and high-school-aged young people go directly to their classes at 10:30 A.M.

Infants & Toddlers

Our Infant/Toddler Room is a place to play and to learn how to socialize with other children. Ginger Johnson, a certified early childhood teacher with her own preschool, oversees our infant/toddler room. This age often has difficulty separating from parents, so our goal is to help our youngest learn that church is a safe place and a place to make new friends. The Toddler Room is located on the lower level of the FAITH center.

Preschool (Three + yrs.) and Kindergarten

The focus of our Pre/K classes are both seasonal and thematic. They start the year “Making Friends” and then learning that “God is our Friend”. “Giving Thanks” is our theme during November and “Christmas” during December. In January, following the birth of Jesus, they learn about what Jesus’ life might have been like as a child. They will then learn about one of Jesus’ parables. We teach the Easter story very gently, being sensitive to the needs of children this age. Then they spend the remainder of the Spring exploring God’s wonderful creation! Each Sunday morning includes play, story, crafts, and games. The preschool and kindergarten classrooms are located on the lower level of the FAITH Center.

Elementary Grades (First - Fifth grade)

FAITH CAMP is the Sunday morning program for our 1st – 5th Graders. Faith exploration grows from a firm foundation laid during the elementary years. They explore both old and new testament stories through art, drama, music, story, games, and worship. They move to a different activity each week, hearing the story and experiencing it through different senses. As they learn the story, they explore what it has to teach us today, and what the context of the story was to the people of the time and place of its origin. Elementary children attend worship with their parents and leave as a group with their teachers following the Children’s Moment (or a time indicated in the bulletin). Classes use different rooms based upon the activity for the week – check the posted list at the FAITH Center entrance.
