As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not to be haughty, or to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life. 1 Timothy 6:17-19
These verses explain to us how God richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment (verse 17). God wants us to be happy, to take hold of life that really is life (verse 19), and to experience abundance beyond anything we can earn or deserve.
For many years I felt tithing was my duty and I listened. Then I was exposed to another way of understanding it. I learned that my income was not just my private possession. I earned this income but it was also a gift from God. For years, I had been tithing out of duty, not faith. I began to learn and understand how tithing was a faith practice, NOT a duty. This new understanding shifted my attitude and tithing became fun! Now when I place my check in the plate, I smile, because I enjoy sharing my monetary gifts with this church and what it does for others. This church is God’s instrument and I’m helping it play in this world.
No one can tell me how much to share…that’s between me and God and I privately seek God’s direction. I hope you will begin (or continue) your private conversation with God and see where it goes as you consider your tithe for 2020.
Lord, you know our hearts and minds and we seek Your guidance as we consider our gifts to this church. May we be able to give with our hearts as well as our head knowing that you are always with us in whatever we do.
