Worship

Church congregation singing in the sanctuaryWorship is the center of our life together in God. We sing the old hymns we’ve loved for generations, but with more inclusive language, as well as new songs, sometimes from other parts of the world. We pray for one another and for the needs of our broken and weary world. We look to Jesus as both an exemplar of our faith and a window into the very heart of God. We open the pages of Scripture, and receive its invitation to imagine and question, to doubt and discern, to wrestle and wonder about what it has to say to us about who we are, who God is, and how God wants us to live. We give thanks for the ways this ancient text links us to a wide circle, the generations of faithful people who have gone before us and the millions around the world seeking to follow the way of Christ, and who, like us, find in God’s story the love that gives our lives meaning, purpose, identity, comfort, and courage.

We believe this story is unfinished, which means that our still-speaking God is continually inviting us to participate in it, to allow our lives to be subplots of the grand narrative, and to make our own contributions to its ongoing unfolding epic. Through our worship, the hearts and hands of young and old are shaped for God’s justice and joy. Blessed by our time together, by the good company we share, and by God’s overflowing grace, we are sent out to be a blessing to others.

Come and join us! Our regular Sunday service times are:
  • September to May: 8:30 a.m. Chapel; 10:30 a.m. Sanctuary
  • June to August: 10:00 a.m. Sanctuary

All Sanctuary services are streamed live through YouTube Livestream.

Contemplative Prayer Worship

Once a month or so, on Sundays at 8:30 a.m. and occasionally on a weekday evening, we come together for a service that includes meditative readings and poetry, extended moments of silence, and Taizé singing. As these quiet worship services draw near on the calendar, notices are sent out in the Weekly Friday emails.

On the first Sunday of every month, children and youth stay with the adults through the 10:30 a.m. service in the Sanctuary for worship that is thoughtfully intergenerational. Children and youth are invited to participate in leading worship, reading Scripture, and serving communion. Children may sit at tables at the front of the Sanctuary, where special bulletins and quiet, engaging activities help them explore themes of the worship service.

We love to experiment with new forms of worship and sometimes combine worship with a festive meal, gathering around tables in Plymouth Hall on Saturday nights or Sunday mornings for an intergenerational service that includes table conversation, a short sermon, lots of singing, and really good food made by members of congregation who enjoy cooking for a crowd. Brunch Worship on the Sunday morning following Christmas often includes cinnamon rolls!
