New Eyes

By: Amy Ostwald

The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light. Matthew 6:22 (New Revised Standard Version)
I was fortunate to celebrate my 60th birthday this year by spending a few days in a friend’s rustic mountain cabin.

Upon our arrival, I quickly tossed my belongings into the small upstairs area where I would be sleeping. My eyes registered a bed, a small table, and a dresser placed under a framed mirror. It promised to be a comfortable place after a hike and dinner—and it was.
The next morning, I rose from my bed and turned to do what is habit for so many of us in this culture: I turned to the mirror to inspect and criticize my image. I knew what to expect: there would be deepening wrinkles, emerging grays, droopy eyes and sunspots. I was 60, after all— and maybe there would be more signs of aging that I hadn’t previously recognized…

But instead of seeing my face, I saw three white Aspen trees. Ha! The frame above the bureau held a window, not a mirror. The “eyes” on the Aspen trees gazed back at me quietly and peacefully. There was no judgment here, just a hello from God’s creation. In a matter of seconds, I was transported from judgment to liberation. Washed in grace, I laughed at my error and smiled at the day.

Creator God,
As we go forward into the years, help us to embrace the changes that come and to age with your grace. May we see ourselves through your loving eyes.
AMEN
